Workshop on Molecular Biology and
Immunology in Malaria Vaccine Development
Deadline for applications: 26 May 2006
Background and Justification
More and more centres across
Africa are currently getting involved or are earmarked for
clinical evaluation of candidate malaria vaccines. This
increased activity in malaria vaccine research is inevitably
creating a demand on laboratories that must participate in the
process. Unfortunately, state of the art molecular biology and
immunology needed for vaccine development is not routinely
taught in our universities in Africa. The mass of researchers
who get opportunities for formal training in these fields
remains too low, and therefore, there is an urgent need to
expose many African scientists to these areas if they are to
make any meaningful participation. AMANET recognises this need,
and has in the past three years consistently organised training
workshops in this field bringing young African researchers in
contact with leading scientists in molecular biology and
immunology of malaria vaccine development.
This workshop is unique
because participants will also have the opportunity to attend a
Symposium organised by Makerere University. Makerere
University-University of California at San Francisco (MU-UCSF)
Malaria Collaboration and Uganda Malaria Surveillance Program (UMSP)
have an ongoing programme and are currently organising a two-day
Annual Symposium scheduled for 26-27 June 2006. The Symposium
will offer presentations focusing on malaria treatment, control
and research priorities.
The formal AMANET workshop
will then follow on 28-30 June 2006, with focus on malaria
vaccine development. A competent
faculty of facilitators has been selected to provide up-to-date
teaching on the subject.
Highlights of topics to be
covered include:
-
malaria vaccine product profile;
-
malaria vaccine development strategies;
-
host
genetic factors and protection from malaria;
-
immunity to severe and pregnancy malaria;
-
experiences with Synthetic peptides and Recombinant protein
technology;
-
clinical trials for evaluating malaria vaccines;
-
assays for evaluating immune responses;
-
immunological correlates in the evaluation of malaria
vaccines;
-
malaria parasite diversity and development of vaccine and;
-
ethical issues in malaria vaccine development.
Timing
The workshop is intended to
take five full days scheduled for 26-30 June 2006.
Venue
The workshop will be hosted in
Kampala, Uganda, by Makerere University Faculty of Medicine at
Hotel Africana.
Who can apply?
Researchers working in
immunology and molecular biology laboratories are participating
in, or likely to be involved in malaria vaccine development.
Candidates from centres being developed by AMANET are given
preference.
How to apply
Interested persons should
submit a complete application, which must include the following:
-
Curriculum vitae;
-
Summary of the research
and role in current research (not more than 10 lines);
-
Show how this workshop
would benefit you and your institution (not more than 10
lines);
-
Names and addresses of two
referees (including their telephone numbers and email
contacts), who you have requested to provide letters of
recommendation, to be sent directly to the address below.
Please note that only
applications meeting the above requirements will be considered.
