job opportunity.

Executive Director of the European Malaria Vaccine Initiative

Deadline for applications: 31 March 2006

Applications are invited for the position of Executive Director of the European Malaria Vac-cine Initiative.

In 1998, the European Commission and interested EU Member States established the European Malaria Vaccine Initiative (EMVI).

EMVI’s mission is to contribute to the global effort to control malaria by:

  • providing a mechanism for accelerated development and clinical trials of malaria vaccines in Europe and Developing Countries,
  • promoting affordability and accessibility of malaria vaccines in Developing Countries,
  • engaging European and international resources committed to malaria vaccine research.

EMVI is providing technical and financial support to eight malaria vaccine candidates, four of which are in clinical development, the other four being in various stages of pharmaceutical development.

The current Executive Director wishes to retire during 2006, and applications for the position are therefore invited.

Based on a mid-term review of EMVI in 2005 (see www.emvi.org/news), EMVI is developing a strategy for the period 2006 – 2010. The incoming Executive Director shall assist the EMVI Board in the final development of EMVI’s strategy.

EMVI’s constituencies comprise, the Board, the final decision taking body representing the donors and stakeholders, who are advised by an independent Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC). The contracting institution, Centre for International Health, University of Bergen, is EMVI’s administrative arm. The Executive arm is the secretariat, currently comprising the Ex-ecutive Director, a personal assistant and two Project Managers.

The secretariat’s main office is in Copenhagen with the Project Managers domiciled in London and Paris. As EMVI may expand its activities by also contributing to the co-ordination of European Vaccine Re-search, more staff may be needed, with all members of the secretariat under one roof. A decision on this and other practical issues has not yet been taken, and it is envisaged the incoming Executive Director shall take part in the decision process.

Qualifications:

The following qualifications are considered essential:

  • Medical degree with master or diploma in public health or epidemiology.

  • Experience-Background in international public health and intimate experience in intervention strategies for poverty related diseases. Experience in clinical trials an asset.

  • Work Experience
    • At least five years experience in international public health activities.
    • Proven excellent managerial competence and leadership.
    • Fluent in English.

The position entails extensive travelling in Europe and occasionally in Africa.
