Ethics Coordinator

The African Malaria Network Trust (AMANET) is a pan-African non-profit institution whose mission is to promote capacity strengthening, performance and impact of African malaria R & D institutions. The Trust was incorporated in Tanzania on 14th March 2002.

Currently AMANET undertakes short- and long-term training of African malaria researchers, infrastructure improvement, equipping research institutions, and sponsorship of clinical and field trials of candidate malaria intervention tools.

AMANET is pleased to invite applications from suitable candidates for a vacant position of Ethics Coordinator to be based at the Secretariat in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania.

Purpose of the Job
The responsibilities of the Ethics Coordinator will include, but not limited to the following:

  • Manage a broad health research ethics capacity strengthening programme involving at least twenty Institutions across Africa;
  • Design tools and conduct of Ethics Review Committees (ERCs) / Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and investigators at AMANET funded institutions;
  • Facilitate in health research ethics teaching / training exercises;
  • Monitor the functioning of the  Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) or Ethics Review Committees; (ERCs) which receive support from AMANET;
  • Be able to prepare for project reviews and programme evaluations;
  • Liaison with international consultants;
  • Organise and coordinate high calibre research ethics workshops;
  • Censor, monitor, and edit subscriber postings on the internet;
  • Compile case studies, and coordinate ethicists’ replies;
  • Review AMANET trial protocols for ethical inputs;
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator / Managing Trustee

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in health research ethics or related field;
  • A track record of at least 2 years in active research ethics in an African context;
  • Able to travel extensively across  Sub-Saharan Africa;
  • Dynamic, self driven individual;
  • Reasonable understanding of ICH-GCP;
  • Knowledge of French is an advantage;
  • Experience as ERB / IRB Administrator or Secretary is desirable.

Emoluments
The basic salary for this position will be USD 36,000 per annum.  The position carries attractive fringe benefits.
